Surely it’s every entrepreneur’s dream to work with clients they love, clients who value their expertise and let them do their best work. Which is why it’s so frustrating when you’re putting in all the effort, showing up and just not winning the clients that you want. I come across this situation quite often with my coaching clients and can completely relate because I’ve been there myself as well.
In the early days of my business, before I carved out my niche and gained clarity around what I was brilliant at and who my favourite clients were, I would quite often take on work that didn’t really play to my strengths but did help pay the bills. We’ve all been there, some of us are still there, and there’s no shame in doing what you’ve got to do to make your business work. The point is to stay focused on where you want to be headed and have the courage to keep taking steps in that direction, however big or small, even when it feel like you’re not moving fast enough.
Reading the Signs
In my experience, there are 3 tell-tale signs that you need to work on your client acquisition strategy:
You aren’t getting any enquiries in the first place
You’re not getting the right enquiries
You’re not winning the work.
All of these scenarios are frustrating and can really wreak havoc on your confidence, but the good news is that there is a lot you can do to turn any and all of these around.
Ideas to Inspire Action
KNOW YOUR IDEAL CLIENT
The first step is to get crystal clear on who you really want to be working with – your so-called ideal client. For many of us this is easier said than done. Most of us have a general idea of who we’d like to work with and what kinds of projects we’d like to win (who hasn’t checked out their competition only to discover a project that they’d have loved to be part of?!), but when it comes time to create a muse or ideal client persona, we get stuck in demographics that, at the end of the day, don’t provide much valuable insight.
By developing a clear understanding of who your ideal client is, what motivates them to work with you and how you provide value to them, it becomes infinitely easier to connect and communicate with them.
In Dream Client Connection we focus on getting crystal clear on who you want to work with and we create a strategy for you to start connecting with them. Click here to find out more.
SHOW YOUR DREAM CLIENT WHAT YOU’RE CAPABLE OF
No one will buy from you if they can’t see what you‘re capable of. Let your audience see what you can do for them by sharing your expertise. Don’t fall into the trap of waiting for your dream project to come along – instead get practising! Create a mock-up, showcase how and what you would deliver, refine your expertise or creative style, showcase what you’re capable of.
CURATE YOUR PORTFOLIO
Whether it’s a portfolio of creative work, or testimonials from happy clients – curate what you’re putting on display. Cut out anything that doesn’t resonate with your ideal client or isn’t the kind of work you want to win more of.
CUT OUT THE NOISE & FOCUS
Stop comparing yourself to your so-called competition, stop signing-up for resources that don’t support your growth. Instead, focus on your strengths, highlight what you are brilliant at, and strive to build your confidence. Building your confidence means investing in yourself to further develop your expertise, learn something new, and focusing intentionally on what you’re doing well, what’s working, and why your dream clients should be working with you.
