5 Powerful Game-Changers for your Career

Today I’m sharing 5 game-changers to re-energize your career.

For the last few months, I’ve been beta testing my Personal Branding for Career Climbers programme with some truly inspiring and wickedly intelligent women. We’ve worked through all kinds of mind-set blocks, discovered new career opportunities, and taken action towards achieving some pretty big goals! On the flip side, I also learned a lot about the specific needs of career climbers (as opposed to entrepreneurs) in building their personal brands.

 

This post is especially for you amazing career gals out there who are suffering from feelings of dissatisfaction, stagnation, or uncertainty. If you feel like you’ve kind of hit a roadblock, or are looking for more passion and fulfillment in your work, read on!

Here are 5 ways you can move your career forward and also feel more fulfilled in your current work!

1. Stop thinking of yourself as an employee…

… and start seeing yourself more as a service provider

This is a concept I absolutely subscribe to and I think every career climber needs to embrace. Why? Because it puts you in control of your career and forces you to take responsibility for your work on a daily basis.  If you want to be successful in any part of your life or job, you have to fully understand that you are the driving force behind your success or lack thereof.

 

Start thinking of your employer as a client or customer, as someone you want to make sure keeps coming back to you…

 

…because they love working with you and don’t want to work with anyone else.
…because they were blown away by the quality you provide.
…because there is something unique about how you work that sets you apart from the crowd.
…because you are the expert and the key to their success
…because you bring value to the table.

 

Just to make sure we’re on the same page: this isn’t about you paying your dues or working your fingers to the bone. It’s about establishing yourself as the go-to person for whatever it is you do and building a reputation as the expert. It’s about making clear the value that you bring to the table – for your current employer and future employers.  

 

At the same time, start thinking about the kind of ‘clients’ you want to work with. If you were self-employed, would your employer be someone you’d want to work with or for? Make a list of pros and cons.

2. Stop trying to make yourself fit a job description…

… and start thinking about what a job needs to offer to best fit you!

Whoever wrote that job description did it with certain criteria in mind; why shouldn’t you do the same? It’ll be hard to find true fulfillment with work you just kind of squeezed yourself into.  You wouldn’t buy a pair of jeans that’s 2 sizes too big or too small just because you set out to buy a pair of jeans, would you? The same goes for your work.

 

Take the time to ask yourself what you want out of a job, and how it can help you get closer to reaching your career goals.

3. Look up…

… waaaayyyyy up. (Couldn’t help it! Sorry, you’ll probably only get this if you grew up in Canada before the 90s).

OK, back to the point. I’m talking about looking for a mentor. You’d be hard-pressed to name anyone successful that didn’t have a mentor pulling them up along the way:
  • Sir Freddie Laker mentored Richard Branson
  • Steve Jobs mentored Mark Zuckerberg
  • Larry Summers mentored Sheryl Sandberg
The thing is though, that mentoring has traditionally been a boys-club, with few women looking for mentors, and even fewer women being mentors. But mentoring is absolutely critical to advancing your career and achieving your goals. A mentor will challenge you, help you focus, share experience and give you feedback; they’ll inspire you to reach further than you might have ever thought possible!

 

Have I convinced you yet? If you want to move closer to achieving your career goals, you need to find a mentor that can help you become the best you can be.  The right mentor for you will be someone you look up to, who can help you grow, and will challenge you to learn and take action.

4. Forget about the industry you’re in…

… and start prioritizing your skillset instead.

One roadblock just kept coming up with my Career Climbers over the summer. Many were so focused on what career moves might be open to them in their current industry, that they were completely ignoring the value of their skillset… and that that skillset could be really valuable and attractive to other industries!

 

Start thinking of the hard and soft skills you’ve acquired up until now. What are you really good at? What do you successfully accomplish in your job on a regular basis?

 

Your skillset is much more valuable than you’re likely giving it credit for.

5. Focus on the good

Shift your focus to the aspects of your work you enjoy instead of only emphasizing the aspects that don’t light your fire.

 

It’s so easy to get stuck in a spiral of negativity if your focus is always on what you don’t like, or what isn’t perfect about your work. Instead, think of 3 aspects that you really enjoy, and then try to identify why they bring you joy.

 

The truth is that no job is strawberries and whipped cream every day – even if you’re your own boss and you’ve built an empire working in your true passion. But by focusing on the aspects of your work that you enjoy, you might find that you start feeling more fulfilled. You’ll also gain a better understanding of what work you want to focus on ( see #2 above: start thinking about what a job needs to offer to best fit you!)
